NORMAL RISKS, TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES

As we teach in our other safety courses, such as H2S awareness and SafeLand orientations, CPR training is not a hazard itself. Once a worker has become exposed to a hazard and becomes incapacitated, implementing proper first aid and CPR skills can help save a life. It is important to mitigate the hazards in the workplace as much as possible in order to keep workers safe. This half of the risk mitigation equation prevents injuries and illnesses, but it does nothing once an injury or illness has occurred. When a worker is injured, however, the consequences may be dire, up to and including death. Many companies have focused on removing as many hazards from the workplace as possible and injury rates have plummeted.

BEST INSURANCE, MINIMAL COST

Skills for emergency preparedness in the face of a serious injury include training for first aid and CPR if the worker is not breathing. Planning will have to be made for emergency responders to reach the victim in time to prevent a more serious condition. If the worker is a victim suffering from severe bleeding than first aid will need to be applied in order to prevent further loss of blood. If first aid supplies have been made available at the worksite prior to the incident, then the caregiver will not be forced to use makeshift materials to provide first aid to the victim. This will render the care cleaner, safer, and more effective. If a victim falls unconscious and stops breathing, then they will need CPR and AED applied as soon as possible. The chances of death increase as time goes on from that initial CPR application. Training workers in CPR and first aid skills is inexpensive and carrying first aid kits at the worksite is also not a large expense; emergency preparedness and training is cheap insurance compared to the consequences of a disaster.
